Amy's Class Notes on Puberty (1999)
I don't know if these will help you out but just in case, I added them onto the site.  These are just notes that I took in class in different formats.

Physical Characteristics of Puberty

  1. Development of reproductive organs
get very self conscious -- females tend to be more

  2. Appearance of secondary sexual characteristics
Based on hormonal changes.  Growth spurts, gawky, facial hair, voice changes (male)

  3. Female: begin menstruation

  4. Growth Spurts

  5. Poor coordination

  6. Increased nutitrional requirements
period of rapid growth.  Highest time for boys,  #2 highest for females (pregnancy #1)

  7. Skin disorders

  8. Self interest
    Emotional characteristic

  9. Growing Independence

  10. Concerns over physical appearance.
The #1 characteristic to zone in on for oral home care.

Oral Characteristics of Puberty

  1. Erupting teeth -- up to age 13

  2. Dental Caries -- time of highest dental caries rate (more sugars in school, snacks, unsupervised eating, etc.)

  3. Gingivitis -- Puberty gingivitis.  Exaggerated response to plaque due to hormonal changes.

  4. Orthodontic appliances -- contributing factor to gingivitis. When braces come off, teeth may be pitted if not taken care of.

  5. Poor plaque control.

  6. Inadequate/Cariogenic diet.

  7. Early onset periodontitis.

  8. Juvenile Periodontitis -- if mesial probings of 1st molars are 5- 6 mm, probe lower anteriors if suspect J.P.

  9. ANUG -- older adolescents/younger adults.  Nourishment not the best (16-17).  Plaque, neglected oral hygiene, immune system.  Children may not know what is going on, may not ask.  Painful.

  10. Oral manifestations of STP

  11. Effects of tobacco use -- may start to see kids using "snuff".  Usually boys instead of girls.

  12. Effects of oral contraceptives -- heightened response to plaque.  Higher rate of gingivitis.

  13. Oral findings or bulimia / anorexia -- erosion of linguals of max. anteriors.

  14. Traumatic injury -- football, athletic, automobile, etc.

Dental Treatment Modifications

  1. Approach, treat as adults.

  2. Encourage to talk.

  3. Get info by asking leading questions.

  4. Suggest/advise (don't lecture, don't act as parent).

  5. Don't place all emphasis on home care on parent, teach them to be responsible for their own home care.  Don't need to call parent in.

  6. Need legal consent from parent for any dental treatments (x-rays, sealants, fluoride, etc.)

  7. Treat their needs.

  8. Take as many appts. as needed.  Gingiva may be inflammed, bleeding, infection, etc.

  9. Diet Control.  Food pyramid, snack selection if seeing a lot of caries.

  10. Need to look at fluoride exposure.  (may be on fluoride vitamins until 13-14).

If you would like to add your class notes, please send me an email and I will add them to the site and credit you for your help!
