Amy's Class Notes on Pregnancy (1999)
I don't know if these will help you out but just in case, I added them onto the site.  These are just notes that I took in class in different formats.

Physical Characteristics of Pregnancy

  1. Morning sickness. Can last all day, may be nauseous.

  2. Moody. *touchy

  3. Fatigue

  4. Weight gain.

  5. Breast enlargement.

  6. Back aches

  7. Cravings / Food Avoidance.

  8. Increased urination.

  9. Increased sensitivity to tastes and smells.  May not want to get polished due to taste of polish.

Oral Characteristics of Pregnancy

  1. Gingivitis (not every case)
    - Exaggerated response to plaque
    - enlarged
    - shiny
    - bleed easily
    - color change

  2. Pyogenic Granuloma ( pregnancy tumors -- not malignant)
    - isolated gingival enlargement
    - color: purple red to blue
    - bleeds easily
    - painless

  3. Enamel Erosion -- prolonged period of vomiting due to morning sickness.
    - max. anterior teeth
    - Do not immediately brush after vomiting, tell patient to rinse to neutralize.

  4. Caries - Hx. of previous neglect
    - not result of pregnancy

Dental Treatment Modifications

  1. Recall may be needed 2-3 months.  Last trimester is usually more exaggerated.  Can see 2-3x during pregnancy.

  2. Frequent appointments

  3. Complete hygiene tx. before baby is born in possible (not sc/rp procedures)

  4. Short appointments.

  5. allow extra time for treatment if needed.

  6. No Radiographs.

  7. MD consultant -- if indicated.

  8. Change patient position.

  9. Easy access to chair and cuspidor.

  10. Sensitive gag reflex.  May be exaggerated during pregnancy.

  11. Postural hypotension.  May get dizzy if gets up too fast.

  12. No Nitrous.

  13. Stress plaque control.

  14. Dietary modification.  Reduce sweet sugar-laden foods.

  15. fluoride

  16. educate on newborn dental health
    - systemic fluoride @ 6 months.
    - baby bottle syndrome -- have pamphlet if available.
    - juice can be just as bad as milk in a bottle at night.
    - use gauze / washcloth to swab baby's gums.

  17. If observe problems during pregnancy, have come back ASAP after baby is born for recall.
