Pellicle Pellicle
Why are you there?
I get my teeth cleaned
And you don’t even care.
You coat my teeth
So fast you grow
But you sneaky thing,
You don’t even show!
Saliva Saliva
Let’s have a talk
I know I eat sugar
Must you watch like a hawk?
The minute I gobble
Something sweet and sticky
You start dividing that sucrose
And from here it gets tricky!
Sucrose Sucrose
You disaccharide
I really like you,
Can’t you be on my side?
Instead you are feeding
The great enemies
And my poor pellicle
They wont’ let it be!
Bacteria Bacteria
That sucrose you like
As you eat it glucans and grow
And then fructans that hide
On my pellicle wall
Your colonies sneak
If I leave you there
Together you’ll creep
Biofilm Biofilm
Your chemicals talk
And your bacteria connect
With their matrix lock
Oh, is plaque what you
Want to be called today?
Let’s not be picky
Biofilm/plaque…it’s all the same.
Caries Caries
You’re not welcome here
If it wasn’t for mutans
You might disappear
Those cocci that form
On my beautiful crown
Can seep into my pits
and decay might be found
Mutans Mutans
Yes, you are the first
But Listerine’s coming
I’ll spit and you’ll burst!
But if you are quick
And your community grows
You send the filaments and rods
that my gingiva shows.
Perio Perio
Please stay away
My gingiva’s red
But NO, NOT AA!!!!
I know it is cozy
In the pocket you form
But the water pik’s coming
Watch out for the storm!
Some of you critters
Might make my gums bleed
And if you’re there long
They may start to recede
Wiggle, Jiggle
If we’ve lost the JE
in my hands
My teeth may be
So sad it would be
To eat only applesauce
Because all my teeth
To you bullies I’ve lost
And of my smile
What will be?
Just lips and gums
For all to see.
What a horrible thought!
What a horrible sight!
In my mouth you’re not welcome,
I’m through being polite.
Too nice I’ve been
To let you stay
At my mouth’s expense
As you play
Pellicle, Saliva
Sucrose too
Biofilm, Bacteria
And Perio’s crew.
I know everything about
The harm you all can make
But surely I can stop it
If your sequence I break
I have it down
What I must do
To keep my mouth
From seeing you.
When I eat
What tastes so yummy
The mouth start’s doing
Something crummy
Sticky Sticky
Are the sweets
Cookies and cake
Aren’t good to eat
Brush Brush
And use that floss
And my teeth
Won’t be a loss
My gingiva will
Be pretty in pink
And no red surprises
Will come out in the sink
So simply put
You’ve worn your stay
So move on out
Health starts today!
