Mnemonic Study Tips

These are here to help you study for boards. I have added some that I remember and have asked the Student email community and the RDH email community for help in adding more ideas. If you have any you would like to add to help others out, please Email me and I will add them to the page. THANKS!!! :)

  • This is how I remember which papilla on the tongue don't have tastebuds FILIFORM:
    When you eat, you get filled, when you get filled, you don't taste.
  • Iron Deficiency can cause burning tongue. If you Iron your tongue, it will burn.
  • Afferent arrives, efferent exits.
  • Mucin is a polysaccharide, poly likes music.
  • Aciduric bacteria is DURABLE IN ACID.
  • For radiology remember that radiolucent is dark, radiopaque is light. I remember this by, radioLucent has an Lin it and the L's don't go together.
  • Vitamin D is necessary for Calcium (CA) and Phosphorus(P): Cal and Phos went fishing for D.....the fishing is in there because alot of seafood and oils are sources of Vitamin D.
  • Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble. I remember it by DEAK IS FAT.
  • Vitamin K is responsible for clotting. REMEMBER: K KLOTS.
  • Vitamin B6 = Pyridoxal or pyridxine. It's necessary for metabolism of Tryptophan (essential amino acid=Protein) REMEMBER:6 Pyrex dishes cooking protein
  • HDL is good cholesterol, LDL is bad cholesterol. Remember HDL is happy, LDL is lousy.
  • For dryclave: the degrees is 320 - 340 F for 1-2 hours. it's the oven type. Remember: Dry chicken happens in the oven at 320 for 1-2 hours.
  • I remember that bradycardia is less than 60 beats per minute by: The brady's had six kids
  • Vagus, longest nerve in body, Vital

    Hi - Here's one my friend Laura always said in class when we were learning what instrument is used for what... "My 'nabor' has a furry dog"... To remember to use the Nabor's probe in "furcation" areas!
  • LaDonia sends in the following:
    • pelical, like pelicans, come and go.
    • calculus, like the math, is HARD.
    • Filtrum fills with snot....gross, but it works. And I can remember where it is.....
  • Roxann sends in:
    • I always had trouble remembering antigen and antibody until I came up with: Antigen: foreign to the body (both have "g").
    • This also helps me to remember when testing for HepB: HBsAg Hope this helps
    • I remembered another one that helped me Dentin and Pulp arise from the Dental Papilla (D & P)
    • Periodontal Ligament, Alveolar Bone & Cementum arise from Dental Sac (Pac rhymes w/ Sac)

  • One late study night, we were getting kind of silly when we came up with this one,
    • MC Hammer had a bowel movement while ordering a Luxury car on his PC.
    • Mepivicaine is Carbocaine (MC Hammer)
    • Bupivicaine is Marcaine (bowel movement)
    • Prilocaine is Citanest (PC)
    • Lidocaine is Xylocaine (LuXury car)

  • Diana contributes: You're right---2 is a line angle and 3 is a point angle---I always remembered that by picturing the capital "L"--it's 2 lines to form the
    letter.
  • Barbara contributes: When we were learning how to identify an abnormality in the mouth, we were
    told to classify it by:
    • Size
    • Morphology
    • Location
    • Color
    • History
    • Distribution

    The mnemonic to remember is the abbreviation of a small child.....SMLCHD

    2=B Bleeding present 
    3=C Calculus detected 
    4=D Disappearance of black band begins 
    5=E Entire black band goes in pocket.
  • Hypertrophy is an enlargement of a tissue or organ caused by increase in size, where as hyperplasia is an enlargement of tissue or organ caused by increase in number or normal cells. I differentiate between the terms hypertrophy and hyperplasia by remembering the trophy in hyper"Trophy", and I want the largest trophy. Then I can remember hyperplasia is an increase in number.   • Hypertrophy is an enlargement of a tissue or organ caused by increase in SIZE, where as hyperplasia is an enlargement of tissue or organ caused by increase in NUMBER of normal cells. I differentiate between the terms hypertrophy and hyperplasia by remembering the trophy in hyper"Trophy", and I want the largest trophy (SIZE).   • Hepatitis A from fecAl and orAl route Hepatitis B from Blood
  • Profiramonas gingivalis--Ramona had gingivitis and now she has chronic perio (check spelling)
  • Exogenous--Exit out (staining from outside source) Endogenous--Enter in (staining from within source like dead pulp)
  • Kwashiorkor syndrome of severe protein deficiency. Has the word wash in it. K for cannot (k not) wash out fat. Think of a fat chubby baby who has edema.
  • Tic douloureux which is a trigeminal neuralgia which means irritation of the fifth cranial nerve the trigeminal V. Both Tic and Trigeminal start with T for trigger to touch. When you touch the face and forehead there is severe pain.
  • Addison's disease is due to insufficient production of corticol from the adrenal gland. Mr. Addison has Adrenal problem and cannot control temper.
  • Osmosis has to do with water movement in and out of membrane. Think of an Ocean (beach) for osmosis. The water moves to the sand where there is less water and more sand. Just like that the water moves in the cell if there is more salt or solutes causing the cell to blow up with water.
  • Whikham's striae related with lichan planus. Think of a plant (planus) with branches (straie).
  • stannous fluoride has the word stan, stannous stains
  • Vitamin C for Citrus fruits. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficency causes BeriBeri. B and 1 for Beri Niacin is in wheat bread that is brown and wrinkled so think deficiency of niacin causes skin disease  That's all folks from Nisa Hashmani
  • I make up words or use the alphabet a lot to remember things like:

    As far as leukocytes

    are granular, basophil eosinophil, neutrophil.

    are: LM(N) lymphocytes, monocytes
    To remember the B vitamins: "Two Rights Never Prove Correct" B-1 Thiamin, B-2 Riboflavin, B-3 Niacin, B-6 Pyridoxine, B-12 Cobalamin
    STEPOF are the cranial bones-sphenoid,temporal,ethmoid,parietal,occipital,frontal

  • Vitamin A looks like a carrot upside down, contains beta carotene, which is in carrots (and other orange pigmented foods).
  • To remember some radiographic techniques: Water's projection: chin is tilted upwards Think: when your nose WATERS tilt your chin up to prevent it from running out! Reverse-Towne's Projection: chin is brought down Think: going DOWN TOWNE. They're silly but they help me!

    **For Class I think of the shift in neutral.
    **For Class II think of the shift in 2nd gear and think of the mandible going towards the back like the shifter goes down.
    **For Class III think of the shift in 3rd gear and think of the mandible going towards the front like the shifter going up.

  • Radiology tip: To remember that using the KVP knob makes the electons SPEED up, relate it to a race and call it the KVP 500! Also, if you speed up for too long you'll get LIGHT headed.   • There are 2 bony defects:
    Dehesinse and fenestration.
    Dehesince is a groove like area in the bone and fenestration is an actual "window" in the bone.  We remembered it this way because if you are looking through a fence there is a hole thus fenestration.   Hope this helps.
  • For remembering Bradycardia slows the heart, I just think of it as the Brady Bunch was slightly on the slow side.
  • Colineric drugs are drugs that mimic parasympathetic, normal body functions. Autonomic nervous system -AUTOMATIC. SLUD- Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Defecation.

  • For the Foramen that the cranial nerves V1, V2, V3, VII, IX, & X go through, is Fish Around (the) Valley, (with your) Acoustic Jug. Fish = Superior Orbital Fissure (V1). Around = Foramen Rotundum (V2). Valley = Formamen Ovale (V3). Acoustic = Internal Acoustic Meatus (VII). Jug = Jugular Foramen (IX, X)

  • when I am trying to memorize my sters an amides i think amIdes are in lIver which you use lIdocaIne and prIlocaIne. So I try to think of two I are in amides with an I and in liver with an I
  • Here's one.I could never figure out which antibiotics are bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic. I realized like penicillin inhibits Cell wall synthesis. Cell wall begins with a C and so does cidal. So if they inhibit cell wall synthesis then they are bacterialcidal.. The only antibiotic that it doesn't apply to is metrodiazonle: it is bactericidal but inhibit protein synthesis.

  • A classmate told me this one for sharpening Graceys:  Rod's Leavin - if you
    have the odd end of the instrument (like the 11 end of the 11/12), sharpen
    the right side (as you face it), if you have the even end (the 12 end of the
    11/12), sharpen the left side of the blade (as you face it).  Right=odd,
    Left=even - Rod's Leavin.  She saved me with this one!!!  Thanks Meg (and

  • I thought that it might be helpful – to add on the 3 extra B vits  - Biotin, Folate and Pantothenic Acid.
