I don't know if these will
help you out but just in case, I added them onto the site. These are just
notes that I took in class in different formats.
Physical
Characteristics of Menopause
-
Many people
associate with getting old, may be traumatic.
-
42-55 years of age.
-
Decreased
menstruation. Amounts, how many times.
-
10% pronounced
symptoms.
-
hot flashes /
drenching sweats
-
headaches
-
heart palpitations
-
sleeplessness
-
anxiety / tension /
irritability
-
depression **
-
reproductive organs
atrophy
-
bone changes --
osteoporosis (post menopause more prone)
-
skin and mucous
membrane changes.
-
Predisposition to:
- xerostomia
- athersclerosis
- hypothyroidism (side effect of early menopause)
Post menopause
symptoms usually are: # 11, 12, 13, 14.
Oral
Characteristics of Menopause
-
Exaggerated
response to local irritation.
-
dry mucous
membranes.
-
unusual taste.
Sometimes metallic, sour tastes.
-
Thin epithelium.
-
Decreased
keratinization.
-
Decreased tolerance
to removable appliances. Mouth may be dried out.
Dental
Treatment Modifications ( not needed for everyone)
-
Don't keep patient
waiting.
-
Women are very
sensitive to body changes.
-
Keep physically
comfortable in chair.
-
Hormonal changes
may cause a need for better oral care.
-
Nutritional
counseling may be important.
-
Fluoride still
important.
-
Hypersensitivity.
-
Dry mouth /
xerostomia. Result could be root caries, important to go over oral care.
