Perio Terms

maximum intercuspation, intercuspal position, centric occlusion

Biting on all teeth, home base when we bite down, where most amounts of teeth touch.

Centric relation

condyles are at most superior & posterior unstrained position. Repeatable position.

Excursive movements

moving the mandible away from centric occlusion.

Protrusion

. Move mandible forward.

Retrusion

Moving the mandible backward.

Forces of occlusion

best accepted along the long axis of the tooth.

Physiological rest position

Teeth not in contact, lips at rest, jaws apart.

Freeway space

Space between mandibular & maxillary teeth when mandible is at rest (2-4mm).

Vertical Dimension

Distance between maxilla & mandible when teeth are in occlusion.

Attrition

Tooth on tooth wear.

Abrasion

foreign object wear. (U-shaped)

Abfraction

Tooth slightly flexes during chewing and looses structure at CEJ (v-shaped)
