Gingival & Periodontal Fibers

Contributed by:

Gingival/Supragingival fiber bundles

Rope like collagen fiber bundles located coronal to crest of alveolar bone. Provides rigidity to tissue.

Gingivodental fibers

Embedded in cementum near the CEJ & fan out into the gingival connective tissue. Attach gingiva to teeth. Cementum to tissue.

Circular fibers

Encircle the tooth, coronal to alveolar crest & not attached to cementum of tooth. Connect adjacent teeth.

Transeptal fibers

Pass from cementum of one tooth over the creast of alveolar bone t the cementum of the adjacent tooth. Connect adjacent teeth to one another & secure their alignment in the arch. Cementumà cementum.

Interradicular fiber group

Seen only in multi rooted teeth. Extend from cementum in the furcation area of tooth to the Interradicular septum of alveolar bone. Help stabilize tooth in socket.

Alveolar Crest fibers

Extend cervical  cementum, running downward in a diagonal direction to alveolar crest. Resists horizontal movement of tooth.

Horizontal fibers

Located apical to the alveolar crest fibers. They extend from the cementum to the bone at right angles to the long axis to the root. Resist horizontal pressure against the crown of the tooth.

Oblique fibers

Largest group. Cementum coronal to the bone. Located apical to horizontal group. Extend from cementum to the bone, running in a diagonal direction. Resists vertical pressures that threaten to drive root into its socket.

Apical fibers

Extend from apex of tooth to bone. Secures tooth in socket & resists forces that might lift the tooth out of socket. NONE in young undeveloped unerrupted teeth.

Sharpey’s fibers

Ends of the PDL. Fibers that are embedded in the cementum & alveolar bone.
