Contributed by:

- What factors affect perio disease? Bacterial
plaque, tooth position, mouth dryness, calculus, iatrogenic
- Bacterial plaque must be present for: other agents
to cause perio
- What must be done for the patient with un normal tooth
position?
They should be taught how to remove plaque properly
from those teeth, which are not in normal position.
- Stannous fluoride 1.64% has what affect on bacteria,
when looking at bacteria in microscope?
It makes the bacteria move away
from the surface.
- List 3 things used for subgingival irrigation:
Chlorhexadine, stannous
fluoride, & betadine (provone Iodine).
- Sonic has 6000 cycles / second, driven
by air, 40lbs of pressure.
- Ultrasonic 20,000 driven by
electrical energy.
- 3 mechanisms of action for the sonic/ ultrasonic:
Lavage,
vibration, & acoustic streaming.
- Lavage: flush.
- Vibration: knocks calculus loose.
- Acoustic streaming: destroys cell wall.
- The lighter the pressure the greater the
vibration.
- What should be adjusted first..second?
Adjust power first then
frequency.
- High power= calculus
- Low power= deplaque
- List the ideal goals of non surgical perio therapy:
Absence of bleeding,
pink/stippled gingiva and 3-4 mm pocket (residual).
- What is the realistic goal of perio therapy?
To stop the progression of the
disease.
- What are indications that perio disease is
progressing?
Attachment loss and or bone loss
- Perio surgery is done for what reason?
To provide access to the pocket
for the patient so they can keep bacteria out of the pocket.
