ntro to Dental Anatomy

  1. Dental anatomy is the study of: the mouth & teeth dealing with morphology (form, size, shape) of teeth.
  2. Oral cavity= mouth.
  3. Natural teeth in jawbones= dentition.
  4. List characteristics

Maxilla

Mandible

 Upper jaw

Lower jaw

Fixed rigidly to skull

 Large horse shoe shaped single bone

Largest bone of the face

 Only bone in skull that’s moveable

Supports upper/maxillary teeth

Supports lower/ mandibular teeth

Paired 2 bones form upper jaw, right & left maxillary bones

 

For the following questions put what dentition, each phrase is connected with

  1. Baby teeth, milk teeth, temporary teeth: Deciduous
  2. Ugly duckling stage: Mixed
  3. Adult teeth, secondary teeth: Permanent
  4. 20 teeth: 10 maxillary, 10 mandibular: Deciduous
  5. Occurs between 6-12 years old: Mixed
  6.  16 teeth in each quad: Permanent
  7. Begin with eruption of primary mandibular molar: Deciduous
  1. Succedaneous: All teeth that replace deciduous teeth. Centrals, laterals, premolars.
  1. Non-succedaneous: All permanent molars that come in without replacing any teeth. Molars (1st,2nd, 3rd).
  1. What is the function of teeth? Mastication=chewing.
  1. Permanent anterior teeth & function

·        Incisors:   central (4)

                                         Laterals (4)

                                    Used to cut food.

·        Canines:    Cuspids, pointed teeth, 1 each quad, tearing or piercing food.

  1. Permanent posterior teeth & function
    • Premolars/ bicuspids:

2 each quad

Crush & tear food

    • Molars:

12 total, 3 each quad

Grinding food

  1. Active eruption: Emergence of the tooth from its position in the jaw to its position in the occlusion.
  2. In the deciduous dentition what replaces the 1st molar when it is lost? 1st premolar.
  3. I the deciduous dentition what replaces the 2nd molar when it is lost? 2nd premolar.
  4. DAQT system of tooth description:

D= dentition

A= arch

Q= quadrant

T= tooth type

  1. Describe the surfaces of the teeth:
    • Facial: facing toward the face:

a.      Buccal: toward the cheek (molars).

b.      Labial: toward the face, lip area (incisors).

·        Lingual: inside facing the tongue.

·        Occlusal: biting surface on posterior teeth.

·        Incisal: anterior teeth.

·        Mesial: Toward mid line.

·        Distal: Farthest away from mid line.

·        Proximal: distal & mesial surfaces.
