Sutures

  1. What are sutures necessary for? To close a wound, position of reposition flap, tissue graft.
  2. Absorbable sutures: digested by body fluids & enzymes with normal healing process.
  3. Surgical gut: most common, sheep intestine.
  4. Non-absorbable sutures must be removed in: 5-10 days.
  5. Non-absorbable sutures are composed of: silk, synthetic (nylon).
  6. List supplies needed for suture removal: mirror, gauze, cotton pliers, curved sharp scissors, topical (?), suction.
  7. Place the steps for suture removal in order:

4- Pull knot- this prevents external part of suture from passing thru the tissue.

7- have dentist ok.

1-    Check pts, med hx.- may cause bacterium, SBE coverage?

5- place on gauze & count.

3-Scissors under knot & cut.

6- gauze to stop hemorrhage.

2- grasp suture knot with cotton pliers & gently pull up 2mm.
